I am more agitated than usual about finding signs of Spring... perhaps this Winter has thrust me out of my comfort zone and reminded me that we humans cannot control everything, or perhaps it is the fact that I have discovered I am living near hare territory. For the first time in my life I have the opportunity to see, admire and learn from these intriguing creatures and I am anticipating catching a glimpse of their fabled March rituals.

Hares are solitary and territorial creatures who, unlike rabbits, only seem to share space with their own kind during mating. It is the mating behaviour that most fascinates me, that I yearn to witness with my own eyes. I find it interesting that I was taught this spectacle was enacted by male hares jousting to win the right to the female, when in reality it is the female tests her suitors stamina with boxing rites until she chooses who has made the grade.

Leverets are born almost fully developed and do not need much rearing from their mother. Soon after she has birthed them, they leave the nest and she returns to her solitary existence.

Perhaps it is this singular feminism of the hare that has given it the curse of being an unlucky presence as the patriarchal values reject female behaviour that cannot be subjugated... Boudicca, it is said, carried a banner with a moon hare on it.

Hare teaches discernment in our choices by testing out the options before making the final decision. Hare teaches independence and self-sufficiency and an ability to survive when the company of others is scarce. Hare, with her agile body and capacity for speed teaches us to leave the past behind and move forward...
